However, Gmane needs hardware. As it grows, it needs more hardware -- the search engine, the web servers, the news server, the MTA and the threading daemon all get more and more bogged down as time passes, and new hardware has to be procured. And stuff breaks down, too, and has to be replaced.

The first couple of years, I just paid for stuff, or my employer did, or I scrounged outdated equipment. Last year, I started running ads, which allowed me to buy some hardware, but not enough.

This year I started taking donations, and I switched the ads off. The ads may not remain off forever, though -- it all depends on how the donation scenario goes.

The current item to be paid off is a backup news server. If the main one should go down in flames, it sure would be nice to have a backup of the entire spool that would be more or less usable without too much of a delay. The server is an Opteron server with lots of RAM and a couple of big disks, and is running inn in "slave mode", so that all the article numbers are the same on the main server and the backup server.
