Gmane Hosting
Gmane is hosted in the colocation rack of the Norwegian Internet stock broker Net Fonds, who is also donating IP connectivity.The Hardware
| sea runs the news server, and is a 4U dual Xeon 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM machine with eight 160GB IDE disks run off a 3Ware Escalade IDE RAID card. Six disks are in a RAID5 configuration (with XFS on top), and is used as the news spool file system -- 800GB available for usage. The two other disks are used in a RAID1 configuration as the system disk (as well as for NOV storage). Use of this machine was donated to Gmane by the NUUG Foundation. | |
| ciao is the main HTTP server, the CVS pserver and the RSS generator. It's a 1U dual Opteron 2GHz machine, with two SATA disks running RAID1. The OS is amd64 Debian. It was paid for by web ads and donations. | |
| deer serves out most of the web content and runs weaverd. It's a 1U dual 2.4Ghz Opteron with 8GB RAM, paid by me. | |
| lo is the primary MTA, and is a 1U dual quad-core 1.87GHz Xeon "Clovertown" (i.e., Core 2) machine, paid for by sponsorship money. | |
| dough is the secondary MTA, and is a 4U dual 2.2GHz Opteron, mostly assembled from spare parts from other machines. | |
| ger is the the new news server, and is a 1U Core 2 Duo machine with 8GiB RAM (for disk caching), and a FibreChannel connection to a Sataboy RAID cabinet (with 2.2TB worth of disk in total), paid for by sponsorship money. | |
| plane is the spool backup machine and search engine re-indexing machine. It is a 2U dual AMD MP2000+, 2GB RAM machine with a 200GB disk (with XFS on top). It was kindly donated by Net Fonds. | |
| rain is the new search engine machine, running Xapian. It's a 2U Athlon 64 2GHz machine, 3GB RAM with 500GB disks for index storage and a spool mirror. It was bought from funds generated by web ads. | |
| hugh runs weaverd, which is the daemon behind the web interfaces. The machine is a 2U 2GHz Opteron with 4GB PC3200 RAM. It has 2x250GB SATA disks for index storage and yet another spool mirror. It was paid for by web ads. | |
All the machines run Debian GNU/Linux.
